A Prayer That Begins with Father

My dear son,

When you do not know how to pray, begin by calling me Father. That is how the prayer Jesus taught his disciples begins. I am not a distant stranger waiting for you to find the right way to address me.

Ask for my name to be honored and my kingdom to come, and tell me about today's need for bread. Bring the forgiveness you need and your desire to forgive others. Great purposes and everyday needs both belong here.

This morning, pray for a meal and for the neighbors who share your life. Ask for help to resist what would draw you astray. Lay the whole of your day openly before me.

With all my love,
Your Father

Luke 11:1–4

WEB

1When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”

2He said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

3Give us day by day our daily bread.

4Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’”

A short reflection

At a disciple's request, Jesus teaches a prayer for the Father's name and kingdom, daily bread, forgiveness, and protection from temptation.
