The Centurion's Trust

My dear son,

If you want to ask something for a person you cherish, tell me. The centurion who pleaded with Jesus for his sick servant relied on Jesus' word, not on his own standing. His request carried sincere concern for another person's life.

You can pray for the people you love too. You do not need eloquent words to make me listen. Tell me plainly what good you hope for them. Your care is welcome in our conversation.

Speak the name you want to entrust to me this morning. Consider what practical care you can offer as well. You can trust me with your request without first deciding exactly what every answer must look like.

With all my love,
Your Father

Luke 7:6–9

6Jesus went with them. When he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof.

7Therefore I didn’t even think myself worthy to come to you; but say the word, and my servant will be healed.

8For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

9When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”

A short reflection

The centurion humbly considers himself unworthy to receive Jesus yet trusts the authority of his word, and Jesus marvels at his faith.
