Moses Asked My Name
My dear son,
Your questions about who I am are precious. Moses, too, asked my name because he wanted to know what to tell the people. Being called did not mean he already had every answer from the very beginning.
I made my name known and told him to speak of me as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I want you to know me as the Father who has kept promises and walked with people, rather than only as an unfamiliar power.
Tell me what you wonder about tonight. What you do not know, you can continue to learn. I want to keep talking with you, so that calling my name becomes more than words on your lips and grows into deeper trust.
With all my love,
Your Father
Exodus 3:13–15
WEB13Moses said to God, “Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what should I tell them?”
14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
15God said moreover to Moses, “You shall tell the children of Israel this, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.
A short reflection
When Moses asks what name he should give the people, God reveals his name and identifies himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to be remembered through the generations.
