Questions That Lead to the Story of Rescue
My dear son,
If you wonder why I teach this way of life, you may ask freely. I do not want you to grow as a child who merely memorizes commands without understanding. I want you to know first the love I have already shown.
When Israel's children asked about the commandments, they were to hear how I led an enslaved people out of bondage. Beside my teaching stands a Father's heart that rescued people and kept his promise to them.
When you share faith with someone, tell the story of the love you have received as well. Listen kindly to the person asking about something unfamiliar. Tonight, I want to hear your questions and share my heart with you more closely.
With all my love,
Your Father
Deuteronomy 6:20–23
WEB20When your son asks you in time to come, saying, “What do the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD our God has commanded you mean?”
21then you shall tell your son, “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand;
22and the LORD showed great and awesome signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his house, before our eyes;
23and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore to our fathers.
A short reflection
Moses teaches that when future children ask about the law, Israel should recount how God rescued them from slavery in Egypt and brought them toward the promised land.
