Love Beside the Dim Mirror

My dear son,

There are things you cannot fully understand now, as though you were looking into a dim mirror. I do not want uncertainty to rush you into settling every question. You can continue learning while leaning on the love that knows you.

There is hope of one day seeing face to face and knowing fully. While you wait for that day, let faith, hope, and love grow in your life. Of these, hold love as the most precious.

You may not yet know the whole story of someone you met today. Give yourself room to listen longer and look more kindly. Tonight, lean on the Father who knows you fully, and let even your unfinished understanding rest.

With all my love,
Your Father

1 Corinthians 13:11–13

WEB

11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away childish things.

12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.

13But now faith, hope, and love remain—these three. The greatest of these is love.

A short reflection

Paul describes present knowledge as partial and dim, like a reflection in a mirror, while anticipating full knowledge. Of faith, hope, and love, he names love the greatest.
