Words That Give Life
My dear son,
Do not give up on knowing me when you find a difficult passage in my words. It is all right to say that you do not understand. I do not want you to pass by pretending to know something you have not yet grasped.
Jesus' words are more than information that adds to your store of ideas. They give spirit and life. Open your heart and ask the Holy Spirit for help, instead of confining me within the limits of your own judgment.
There is no shame in not understanding everything at once. Today, you can begin by bringing me one question. Stay near my words over time as you learn to receive the life I give.
With all my love,
Your Father
John 6:60–63
WEB60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”
61But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
62Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
A short reflection
When disciples complain that Jesus' teaching is difficult, he says that the Spirit gives life and that his words are spirit and life.
