Who Holds Your Heart?

My dear son,

I know that money has a necessary place in your life. But I do not want you to give it the place of master over your heart. Your possessions cannot love and guide you as I, your Father, can.

Clear eyes help you see the road, and what your heart looks toward matters, too. If you begin measuring people by what they own, you may miss the faces you are called to love. I want you to see the person first.

Tell me tonight what you most want to cherish and protect. You can bring both saving and sharing under my teaching. Do not spend all the joy of your life in the service of money.

With all my love,
Your Father

Matthew 6:22–24

WEB

22“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.

23But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.

A short reflection

After describing the eye as the lamp of the body, Jesus teaches that no one can serve two masters: people cannot serve both God and wealth.
