Looking Back on the Day with Love

My dear son,

I want to hear where you hope to give your heart, your thoughts, and your strength. Many things may seem to demand your best efforts, but I want love at the center: love for me and care for your neighbor as for yourself.

That love does not live only in grand declarations. It can enter the time you take to listen to someone without interrupting, or the way you refuse to treat your own life carelessly. Ordinary moments have room for it.

Tonight, let the hands that count achievements rest for a while. Open before me the life in which you can give and receive love. I want your love for me to bring warmth into the everyday things you do.

With all my love,
Your Father

Mark 12:28–31

WEB

28One of the scribes came and heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

29Jesus answered, “The greatest is: ‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

30You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.

31The second is like this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

A short reflection

Asked which commandment is greatest, Jesus answers that people should love God with their whole being and love their neighbors as themselves.
