Answering the Call

My dear son,

I would like you to tell me honestly what you desire. You do not have to dress your prayer in words borrowed from someone else. Before Jesus, Bartimaeus spoke plainly about his own longing: he wanted to see again.

Jesus did not simply walk past him. He stopped and called him forward. You need not hesitate over whether you are someone who is allowed to speak to me. I am your Father, and I want to hear your voice.

After his sight was restored, Bartimaeus followed Jesus along the road. I want you, too, to live with the joy of coming to know me. Tonight, tell me both what you hope for and the kind of life you want to lead.

With all my love,
Your Father

Mark 10:49–52

WEB

49Jesus stood still and said, “Call him.” They called the blind man, saying to him, “Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!”

50He, casting away his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.

51Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “Rabboni, that I may see again.”

52Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the way.

A short reflection

When Jesus calls, Bartimaeus throws aside his cloak and asks to see. After Jesus heals him, he follows along the road.
