Coming Near Against the Wind

My dear son,

Out on the sea, with the wind against them, Jesus could see his disciples rowing. The deep darkness did not hide them from his sight. Do not assume that there is a place in your life my attention cannot reach.

As he came toward the disciples, Jesus first made himself known and told them to take courage. I want you to know me as a Father you can trust with your heart, rather than only as something distant, unfamiliar, and frightening.

I want to hear your gratitude on peaceful days and your prayers when your feelings are unsettled. Tell me honestly how you are tonight. You are welcome to remain beside me even when you cannot explain it all.

48Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them,
49but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
50for they all saw him and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them and said to them, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
51He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled;

A short reflection

Jesus walks on the water toward the disciples as they struggle to row against the wind. He reassures them, and the wind ceases when he enters their boat.
