Stopping before the Water Breaks Through

My dear son,

You may pause when a conversation begins to grow harsh. Saying everything to the very end right now is not the only way to communicate your sincerity. Time spent waiting so you can hear someone better matters too.

A small leak in a dam can become a great rush of water, and a quarrel can grow one sentence at a time. Before adding a hurtful word, tell me what is in your heart. Consider calmly what you actually want to resolve together.

This evening, you can give each other quiet space. When you return to the conversation, choose words that help understanding. I want you to grow into someone who carefully tends peace.

With all my love,
Your Father

Proverbs 17:14

WEB

14The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.

A short reflection

Proverbs compares the beginning of a quarrel to releasing water from a dam and urges people to stop before the dispute breaks out fully.
