Learning Quiet in a Loving Embrace

My dear son,

As a weaned child rests comfortably in a mother's arms, you may stay quietly beside me. Our relationship does not require you to gain something more every time we are together. You may lean close simply because you enjoy your Father.

My welcome does not depend on constant conversation or something you have brought to show me. Being near my beloved child is precious in itself. Keep trusting me and enjoy the ease of that love.

Tonight, let your hands rest and take a quiet breath. Share the day's stories as they come to mind, or simply sit still. Through this letter I am offering you my tender desire to hold you close.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 131:2–3

2Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

3Israel, hope in the LORD, from this time forward and forever more.

A short reflection

The psalmist describes a quieted soul like a weaned child with its mother, and urges Israel to hope in the Lord now and forever.
