Listening to the Song of a Lonely Bird
My dear son,
Tonight I want to stay quietly beside you and speak with you. You are not someone lost from my sight in a crowd. Your face and your story matter deeply to me, and I am glad to give them my attention.
If a day comes when you feel like an owl in the wilderness or a lone bird on a roof, come to me. You do not need to hide that feeling. I want to be the Father who hears your lonely story all the way through.
If your evening is peaceful, enjoy it gladly. You might offer a warm greeting to someone who comes to mind. Rest holding gently the truth that both you and your neighbor are precious lives.
With all my love,
Your Father
Psalms 102:6–7
WEB6I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.
7I watch, and have become like a sparrow that is alone on the housetop.
A short reflection
Sleepless in suffering, the psalmist compares himself to birds in the wilderness and ruins and a solitary bird on a roof, expressing his deep isolation to God.
