The Weight of a Friendship
My dear son,
Keep offering kind words to people you have known for a long time. Greet familiar faces gladly and treasure what they share with you. Close relationships grow warm through that sort of attentive care.
If distance opens between you and someone with whom you once shared friendship and worship, tell me. Words from someone close can stay with you especially long. I want you to value trust and learn to be true friends to one another.
If someone you appreciate comes to mind tonight, let us give thanks together. If a relationship holds a difficult story, bring that too. I want you to carry both love and truth through the relationships of your life.
With all my love,
Your Father
Psalms 55:12–14
WEB12For it was not an enemy who insulted me, then I could have endured it. Neither was it he who hated me who raised himself up against me, then I would have hidden myself from him.
13But it was you, a man like me, my companion, and my familiar friend.
14We took sweet fellowship together. We walked in God’s house with company.
A short reflection
The psalmist grieves deeply because his reproach comes from a close companion who once shared friendship and worship in God's house, rather than from an open enemy.
