A Prayer with Open Hands

My dear son,

Open your heart to me like a child stretching out both hands. You do not need to prepare every word of your prayer. I want to hear even a brief question about whether I am here, or a quiet word of thanks.

Trust me as you would lean on a solid rock, and reach toward me. It is all right if explaining your feelings is difficult. Bring your questions and your longing for an answer together. I want to listen.

Tell me your story tonight. You can name the people you love as well. If the words stop for a while, I will not turn away. Stay comfortably beside your Father and catch your breath.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 28:1–2

WEB

1To you, LORD, I call. My rock, don’t be deaf to me, lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.

2Hear the voice of my petitions, when I cry to you, when I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.

A short reflection

Calling the seemingly silent Lord his rock, the psalmist lifts his hands toward the sanctuary and pleads for God to hear his cry for mercy.
