Prayer Has Room for Lament

My dear son,

If there is something you find difficult to say to me, you can still bring it. Prayer is not a time for lovely words that conceal your heart. I want you to know me closely enough to call on me honestly.

If you have called day and night and it seems no answer comes, tell me about that disappointment too. You need not hide the question of why I seem far away. I want you to be able to tell your Father the difficult things.

If your heart is peaceful tonight, rest with gratitude. When someone brings you a deep question, you need not rush to fill the silence. I treasure the kindness that stays beside another person with care.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 22:1–2

WEB

1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?

2My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer; in the night season, and am not silent.

A short reflection

In intense suffering, the psalmist laments that God seems to have abandoned him and remained far away, leaving his cries unanswered day and night.
