As Carefully as the Apple of My Eye

My dear son,

Even a speck of dust in your eye makes you raise a hand to protect it. That is why something dearly treasured is called the apple of one's eye. There is that same tenderness in my care for you. I want you to know how precious you are.

Trust me as you would rest beneath sheltering wings. Ask when you need protection or help. You do not always have to appear able to stand alone. Your life and safety matter deeply to me.

If this is a peaceful evening, receive that peace with gratitude. If you can offer someone a warm place beside you, I will be glad. Let being loved help you care for others too.

With all my love,
Your Father

6I have called on you, for you will answer me, God. Turn your ear to me. Hear my speech.

7Show your marvelous loving kindness, you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies.

8Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings,

9from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.

A short reflection

Surrounded by enemies who seek his life, the psalmist asks God to answer and save him, guarding him as the apple of his eye and hiding him beneath his wings.
