A Song That Holds Tears

My dear son,

I love your bright smile, and I love you when you sit without a word. You do not need to dress up your feelings for me today. Speak slowly, following what is in your heart. I will not rush you into smiling.

If a day comes when grief leaves your pillow wet with tears, tell me about that too. I will never ask you to wait until your tears are dry before coming. You are as precious to me in wordless weeping as in happy conversation.

When you encounter someone else's tears, offer a kind presence. Sometimes staying close matters more than finding an explanation. That is the tender love I want to share with you.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 6:6–7

WEB

6I am weary with my groaning. Every night I flood my bed. I drench my couch with my tears.

7My eye wastes away because of grief. It grows old because of all my adversaries.

A short reflection

The psalmist describes exhausting grief that floods his bed with tears each night and dims his eyes under sorrow and the pressure of his enemies.
