The Grace of Sleeping and Waking

My dear son,

As your day draws to a close, I want to greet you quietly. Being able to lie down and sleep is a precious gift. You do not have to stay awake to keep watch over the whole world. Give your body time to rest.

Receive the ordinary rhythm of sleeping and waking with trust in me. My care for you does not stop when your eyes close. I treasure you just as much when you rest quietly as when you are awake and working.

Leave tomorrow's portion for tomorrow and rest beside me tonight. If you have something to tell me, take your time. My affection for you remains the same even when you are doing nothing at all.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 3:5–6

WEB

5I laid myself down and slept. I awakened, for the LORD sustains me.

6I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people who have set themselves against me on every side.

A short reflection

Surrounded by enemies, the psalmist credits the Lord's sustaining care for his ability to sleep and wake, and refuses to yield to fear before a great opposing army.
