A Conversation Across the Divide
My dear son,
The woman at the well was surprised that Jesus, a Jew, asked her for water. Their communities generally kept their distance. But Jesus continued the conversation and spoke to her about my gift and the living water he could give.
Do not close the door to another person simply because of familiar divisions. People with different backgrounds can ask respectful questions and learn from one another. You can also receive their help with sincere gratitude.
This morning, hold kindness in your heart for people you do not yet know. Listen to what they say, and calmly ask what you want to understand. Through meeting people, learn more of the reach of my love.
With all my love,
Your Father
John 4:9–10
WEB9The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
10Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
A short reflection
In response to the Samaritan woman's surprise at their conversation, Jesus speaks of God's gift and the living water he gives.
