Laughter That Honors Dignity

My dear son,

Please do not make someone's circumstances a joke. A person who is poor is a precious life I made. Mockery of that person reaches the heart of the one who loves them. Possessions cannot measure human dignity.

When misfortune comes to someone else, let it call forth care. Seek something you can enjoy together without putting another person down. I want your laughter to be a source of warmth that leaves room for everyone's dignity.

See the people you meet today through their names and stories. Replace a mocking remark with a respectful one. In ordinary speech, live out my love, which holds both you and your neighbor as precious.

With all my love,
Your Father

Proverbs 17:5

WEB

5Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

A short reflection

Proverbs teaches that mocking the poor insults their Maker and condemns taking pleasure in another person's misfortune.
