Beside the Least of These
My dear son,
Look closely at the needs around you today. You may be able to offer food to someone hungry or hospitality to someone in an unfamiliar place. Find a way for words of love to become something another person can receive.
Jesus welcomed care given to the least of these as care offered to him. Do not let someone's humble circumstances make your love smaller. Cultivate eyes that take every person's needs seriously.
Put care into one act of help you can manage. Sharing a meal or checking on someone who is ill matters. Let your love for your Father take shape in caring for a particular person's life today.
With all my love,
Your Father
Matthew 25:35–40
WEB35for I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you took me in.
36I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me.’
37“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink?
38When did we see you as a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you?
39When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?’
40“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
A short reflection
In his teaching about judgment, Jesus receives food, welcome, and care given to the least of his brothers as acts done for him.
