A Quiet Gift

My dear son,

Look for a kindness you can offer today without attaching your name to it. Your Father sees the hand that quietly notices a need and helps. Goodness remains precious without an audience applauding it.

Let the person receiving help be more than an opportunity for your own praise. Consider how to make the gift comfortable to receive. Your care does not disappear simply because you do not keep reminding people what you did.

Love with the quiet generosity of a right hand whose work the left hand does not know. Look toward your Father as you do good. I treasure the moment when your hands give a neighbor something they need.

With all my love,
Your Father

3But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does,

4so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

A short reflection

Jesus teaches people to give to the needy privately, looking to the Father who sees hidden acts rather than seeking public attention.
