A Heart That Discerns What Is Good

My dear son,

When you hear a new teaching, I want you to be open and also take time to consider it. You need not fear every unfamiliar word or immediately follow something simply because the speaker sounds forceful and certain.

Honor the work of the Spirit while discerning what is good. Ask whether the teaching agrees with my word, and think it through with people you trust. Your desire to recognize what is true and good matters to me.

You do not have to settle everything you have heard tonight. Hold onto the good you have clearly recognized and practice it. Ask for wisdom to turn from harmful evil and follow the truth that gives life to people.

With all my love,
Your Father

19Don’t quench the Spirit.

20Don’t despise prophecies.

21Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

22Abstain from every form of evil.

A short reflection

Paul urges believers not to quench the Spirit or despise prophecy, but to test everything, hold fast to what is good, and avoid every form of evil.
