Making Room to Receive Grace
My dear son,
I hope you will not immediately wave away the love offered to you. Before you accomplish something for me, you need to receive the grace Jesus gives. There is no need to refuse the hands that reach out to wash you.
Peter was startled and resisted when Jesus began to wash his feet. Then he learned that receiving this love was part of sharing life with his Lord. You do not have to appear strong before you can come close, either.
Tell me what you need, and allow yourself to receive help. Rest tonight with a grateful, receiving heart. I treasure the hands with which you care for others, and also the heart that welcomes loving care for you.
With all my love,
Your Father
John 13:6–9
WEB6Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”
7Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.”
8Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”
9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
A short reflection
When Peter refuses to have his feet washed, Jesus says Peter has no share with him unless he accepts. Peter then asks for his hands and head to be washed as well.
