A Voice Across the Waves

My dear son,

I do not want you to think of the one coming toward you as only unfamiliar and frightening. When the disciples were startled to see Jesus on the water, his first words made himself known and offered reassurance.

I want you to feel free to open your heart beside me. Faith does not mean pretending you are never afraid. You may receive me and depend on me without concealing the feelings that are actually present in you.

If your day has been calm, let us enjoy that quiet together. If waves are still stirring within you, tell me about them as well. Tonight, I want you to meet me as your nearby Father instead of keeping me at a distance.

With all my love,
Your Father

John 6:18–21

WEB

18The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.

19When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.

20But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

21They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.

A short reflection

Amid strong wind and rough water, the disciples are frightened to see Jesus approaching across the sea. He identifies himself, and they welcome him into the boat.
