Faith That Listens for Itself

My dear son,

If another person's story of faith first brought you looking for me, that encounter matters. I want you to go further and hear my words for yourself as you come to know me. I want to hear your own confession of faith.

The Samaritans came to Jesus after hearing the woman's testimony. Then, after staying with him and hearing his words, they recognized the Savior for themselves. Time spent learning in that way is precious for you as well.

Tonight, tell me about what you have discovered of me, instead of relying on someone else's fine expressions. Bring your questions, too. I want your faith to grow beyond borrowed words into the trust we share together.

With all my love,
Your Father

John 4:39–42

39From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I have done.”

40So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days.

41Many more believed because of his word.

42They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

A short reflection

The Samaritans who come to Jesus because of the woman's testimony hear him themselves and confess that they now believe he is the Savior of the world.
