A Voice Pointing the Way

My dear son,

You are not a child who must become everyone's savior. John clearly said that he was not the Christ. He welcomed his place as a voice pointing to someone greater than himself, without trying to claim that greater place.

I value your honesty about the part you can carry. Holding onto work you cannot do is not the only way to show love. You may entrust to me the things that belong in my hands.

When your words and life point people toward Jesus, that is valuable service, too. Tonight, let go of the thought that you must always be at the center. I love you as you live faithfully in the place I have entrusted to you.

With all my love,
Your Father

John 1:20–23

WEB

20He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Christ.”

21They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”

22They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

A short reflection

John denies being the Christ, Elijah, or the prophet, identifying himself instead as a voice crying in the wilderness to make the Lord's way straight.
