Possessions Under a Loving Gaze

My dear son,

Jesus looked with love at the man who owned many things. His call to let go came from within that love. I do not want what you own to hold you so tightly that you lose the freedom to love others.

It can be difficult to share things you have carefully gathered. You may tell me honestly about that, too. The reason I love you has nothing to do with how much you are holding in your hands.

Tonight, tell me whom you want to love as you live, instead of only calculating what you might lose. Your Father's desire is for you to follow me with joy, without being held captive by the weight of your possessions.

With all my love,
Your Father

Mark 10:21–22

WEB

21Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross.”

22But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.

A short reflection

Jesus looks lovingly at a wealthy man seeking eternal life and tells him to give his possessions to the poor and follow. The man leaves sorrowfully because he owns much.
