Faith That Asks for Help

My dear son,

Your prayer can begin even when the desire to trust me and a lingering hesitation live side by side. You do not have to choose only words that sound completely certain before you are allowed to speak to me.

The child's father cried out that he believed, while also asking for help with his unbelief. I want you to come to me with that kind of honesty. A child who asks for help is not a nuisance to me.

If you have questions that remain unsettled tonight, bring them as they are. You may depend on me instead of trying to manufacture an impressive faith through your own effort. Lean on your Father as you come to know me better.

With all my love,
Your Father

Mark 9:23–24

WEB

23Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

24Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”

A short reflection

When Jesus says all things are possible for the one who believes, the child's father professes his faith and also pleads for help with his unbelief.
