Joseph's Care for Human Dignity

My dear son,

Even when everyone seems to be moving in the same direction, you do not have to give your heart to something wrong. Joseph did not agree with the decision to put Jesus to death. He kept looking for my kingdom.

I treasured the care with which he took down Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen. Without applause, he showed a love that honored a person to the very end. I want that same tender courage to grow in you.

A person's worth does not disappear when circumstances change. Hold dear the willingness to treat someone with dignity all the way through. The quiet care you give does not escape my notice, and I do not dismiss it as insignificant.

With all my love,
Your Father

Luke 23:50–53

WEB

50Behold, there was a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man

51(he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for God’s Kingdom.

52This man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus’ body.

53He took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was cut in stone, where no one had ever been laid.

A short reflection

Joseph of Arimathea, who awaited God's kingdom and had opposed the council's decision, obtains Jesus' body, wraps it in linen, and places it in an unused tomb.
