A Place Among Those Who Serve
My dear son,
You do not have to keep striving for the highest place among people. Standing above someone else does not make you more precious. You are already my beloved child, before you have any position to point to or defend.
At the table with his disciples, Jesus took the place of one who serves. I want you to use your strength to make room for someone else to sit comfortably, rather than using it to press them down.
Love can be present in work that few people notice. I also treasure the way you gratefully receive another person's efforts. Tonight, let your mind rest from measuring the importance of different places, and settle into my love.
With all my love,
Your Father
Luke 22:24–27
WEB24A dispute also arose among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
25He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
26But not so with you. Rather, the one who is greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
27For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
A short reflection
When the disciples argue over rank, Jesus teaches that a leader should be like one who serves, and identifies himself as the servant among them.
