A Simple Plea for Mercy
My dear son,
You do not have to work hard to convince me how good you are. Nor do you need to arrive with a list of ways you have done better than someone else. I welcome your honest voice calling out to me.
I heard the tax collector who stood at a distance and asked for mercy. When you recognize a wrong you have done, you can speak to me as your Father instead of hiding from me. You may depend on my mercy.
Humility does not make you worthless. It means you do not have to dress yourself up to be loved. Tonight, set down the arguments you have been holding onto through comparison, and rest here beside me.
With all my love,
Your Father
Luke 18:13–14
WEB13But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
A short reflection
In Jesus' parable, the tax collector who asks for mercy goes home justified. Jesus says those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and the humble exalted.
