A Little Room before You Answer

My dear son,

Even when anger rises suddenly, there is a moment in which you can choose. Before returning a sharp word, pause beside me and gather your heart. Your lips have the capacity to carry love too.

A wise person does not let an insult give anger control of the whole response. I want you to speak honestly about what matters to you without choosing words for the purpose of hurting someone else.

Rest this evening so that kind words can find a place in your own heart. Ask me if you need wisdom to speak calmly. As your Father, I want you to grow into someone whose honesty and gentleness belong together.

With all my love,
Your Father

Proverbs 12:16

WEB

16A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent.

A short reflection

Proverbs contrasts the fool who immediately displays anger with the prudent person who overlooks an insult, commending restraint in the first rush of anger.
