Learning Humility before Great Waves

My dear son,

Even a person with much knowledge can become humble again before the open sea. Use what you know well, and keep a heart ready to learn more. The things you do not know do not diminish your worth.

A familiar ship can still pitch sharply before mountainous waves. Rely on me in a world that human wisdom cannot fully comprehend. I welcome your willingness to ask for help and take an offered hand.

Tonight, set your preparations in place and let your body rest. You do not need to supply every answer about tomorrow by yourself. Keep the wisdom of those who share your life and my teaching close to you.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 107:23–26

WEB

23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in great waters,

24these see the LORD’s deeds, and his wonders in the deep.

25For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up its waves.

26They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.

A short reflection

The psalm describes seafarers encountering the storm and towering waves God raises, and becoming afraid as their lives are endangered.
