A Prayer for Mercy

My dear son,

You do not have to choose only one part of your life to bring me tonight. Share the happy moments, the lonely feelings, and the things you regret. Different stories can all belong in the same prayer.

Ask for care where you need it, and ask forgiveness when you recognize a wrong. I will wait if you do not know where to begin. I want you to know the Father who draws close and attends to you.

Open your heart gently tonight. If you need someone's company, speak to a trustworthy person, too. Finish your conversation and rest beside me, knowing I welcome with tenderness the child who asks for grace.

With all my love,
Your Father

Psalms 25:16–18

16Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.

17The troubles of my heart are enlarged. Oh bring me out of my distresses.

18Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

A short reflection

Lonely and distressed, the psalmist asks God to turn toward him, see his suffering, and forgive his sins.
