Discerning a Friend's Words
My dear son,
When someone who cares for you points out a needed correction, take time to consider their intention. Love does not always arrive in words that feel comfortable. I hope you enjoy friendship you can trust over time, beyond pleasant greetings.
A true friend may offer a difficult word because they want you to live well. When you gently correct someone, keep your respect for them present. Love grows together with truthfulness.
If helpful advice comes to mind tonight, let us give thanks. Ask about what you do not understand. I hope you enjoy friendships deepened by listening and learning from each other. As your Father, I want faithful friends to be beside you.
With all my love,
Your Father
Proverbs 27:5–6
WEB5Better is open rebuke than hidden love.
6The wounds of a friend are faithful, although the kisses of an enemy are profuse.
A short reflection
Proverbs values open correction and a friend's faithful wounds over hidden love or an enemy's deceptive kisses.
