You May Sit Beside Me
My dear son,
Will you sit beside me for a while? Tonight, receive what I want to tell you with ease. Our meeting is already precious when your hands are still and there is nothing you are preparing for me.
I treasure your desire to serve. I also want that desire to leave room for our conversation amid your many tasks. Like Mary choosing to listen beside Jesus, you have a good portion in quietly staying close.
Pause even if there is still something to put in order. You do not have to keep working to earn my love. What I want you to hear tonight is that I love you. Receive it comfortably beside your Father.
With all my love,
Your Father
Luke 10:38–42
WEB38As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.
40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.”
41Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things,
42but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
A short reflection
Jesus tells Martha, who is distracted by hospitality, that Mary has chosen the good portion by listening to his teaching.
